Descriptive Paragraph Writing Practice

Category 1: Describing a Person

  1. Describe an elderly person you know well, such as a grandparent. Focus on their facial expressions, the way they talk, and any unique habits they have.
  2. Think of a street vendor you have observed. Describe their appearance, their stall, the sounds they make to attract customers, and the general atmosphere around them.
  3. Describe your favourite teacher. Focus not just on their physical appearance, but also on their personality, their teaching style, and how they make you feel in the classroom.
  4. Describe a toddler you have seen at a park or a family gathering. Focus on their energetic movements, curious expressions, and the sounds they make while playing.

Category 2: Describing a Place

  1. Describe your school library during a busy hour. Focus on the arrangement of books, the studious atmosphere, the low murmurs, and the smell of old paper.
  2. Describe a bustling city market on a weekend evening. Write about the sights of the colourful shops, the sounds of vendors and buyers, and the smells of street food.
  3. Describe your bedroom. Focus on the arrangement of furniture, the colours, the things you have kept on your desk or walls, and how the place makes you feel.
  4. Describe a park just after a heavy rainfall. Focus on the fresh, earthy smell, the glistening leaves on the trees, the puddles on the ground, and the feeling of clean, cool air.

Category 3: Describing an Event

  1. Describe the scene at your school’s Annual Sports Day. Focus on the cheering crowd, the colourful house decorations, the athletes on the track, and the overall feeling of excitement and energy.
  2. Describe a family wedding ceremony you have attended. Write about the decorations, the traditional attire of the people, the sounds of music and rituals, and the festive mood.
  3. Describe your last birthday celebration. Focus on the decorations, the cake, the presence of your friends and family, and the emotions you felt on that special day.
  4. Describe the celebration of a major festival like Diwali or Eid in your neighbourhood. Focus on the lights, the sounds of firecrackers or prayers, the special foods prepared, and the spirit of community.

Category 4: Describing an Object

  1. Describe your school bag on a typical day. Focus on its colour, material, weight, the various things peeking out of it, and the jangling sounds it makes as you walk.
  2. Describe an old family photograph. Write about who is in the picture, what they are wearing, the black-and-white or faded colours, and the memories it holds.
  3. Describe your favourite gadget, such as a smartphone or a gaming console. Focus on its design, the feel of it in your hands, the light from its screen, and why it is important to you.
  4. Describe a musical instrument you like, for instance, a guitar or a piano. Write about its shape, material (wood, metal), the texture of its parts, and the kind of sound it produces.

Category 5: Describing a Scene

  1. Describe the scene at a crowded railway platform. Focus on the rush of people, the announcements over the loudspeaker, the sight of trains arriving and departing, and the variety of travellers.
  2. Describe a quiet sunrise or sunset you have witnessed from a hilltop or a beach. Focus on the changing colours of the sky, the shape of the sun, and the peaceful atmosphere.
  3. Describe the scene outside your window on a stormy night. Focus on the flashes of lightning, the sound of thunder and heavy rain, and the way the trees are swaying in the wind.
  4. Describe the scene inside a kitchen when a festive meal is being prepared. Focus on the clatter of utensils, the aroma of spices, the sight of colourful ingredients, and the busy, happy energy.
